Character Name: Takashi 'Shiro' Shirogane.
Character Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender. I am pulling Shiro from the end of S6. That said, be warned, there are some spoilers for S7 below, as they gave more insight into Shiro's backstory and his motivations that I feel are crucial to the character.
Background and/or History: boop!
One thing I do want to add that is this: due to some Canon Shenaniganry, and Shiro being replaced by a clone for more seasons of the show than the character himself was actually in, there are a few discrepancies in how he presents himself. The voice actor said he deliberately altered the way he spoke as the clone versus the real thing. The devs also said that, at the end of season6 when Shiro merges with his clone, they essentially become 'one and the same', but the clone body did struggle somewhat with rejecting his consciousness, which leads me to believe they aren't quite as immediately compatible as was implied.
Personality: Shiro is a born leader. Calm and decisive in battle, he has the ability to analyze complex situations and come up with on-the-fly solutions often tailored to the strengths of those he has working under him. He excels in the role and is almost always the one everyone else looks to as far in combat situations and just... moments that require genuine mentorship. This ability to stay calm under pressure has saved his butt on numerous occasions, such as in the Galra gladiator arenas and later on as the Black Paladin of Voltron.
He's also kind of criminally incapable of letting other people know when he's struggling with something, internally or otherwise. He has two primary methods of deflection: either he calmly addresses whatever issues he has in a way that suggests to people that he has his shit together and he's essentially Over Them, or he opts to deflect with a humor that verges on the macabre. He will put other people before himself with frightening regularity, routinely endangering his own life for the people around him. It's entirely possible that he has a fairly low value on his own survival, likely stemming from survivor's guilt. He can be selfish at times, however, (see: choosing to go on and potentially jeopardize a mission when he was suffering from an illness that could complicate it) and is certainly no saint. He is an innately good person, but there are times when being so is an effort of will rather than instinct.
He's rarely shown losing his cool, but when he does it often surprises and worries the people around him, since he usually has such a handle on things. The truth is, Shiro has fairly significant and hitherto untreated PTSD stemming from him captivity with the Galra. He has a tendency to throw his discipline out the window when faced with situations that hearken back to that time, has been shown to be panicky and afraid. For all that he projects himself as The Adult, he's still figuring himself out, struggling to deal with the situations he's been in, rationalizing and justifying the choices he's made.
Overall, he's kind of that Cool Older Brother figure, especially where the other paladins are concerned. He protects them as best he can, guides them and encourages them through periods of personal growth. Though he has his demons, he is mostly set on moving forwards, working through them (even if he does it mostly on his own) and overcoming. After all, 'patience yields focus'.

Powers/Abilities: Shiro is a well-trained officer of an Earth-based space Navy. In addition to be an expert strategist and tactician, he's shown as having excellent hand-to-hand combat skills, likely formed well in advance of him ever becoming a gladiator. He's also called a 'legendary' pilot who is known to have broke just about every existing record in flight by his early twenties. Voltron does sometimes push the suspension of disbelief as far as what its characters can do and endure, but Shiro is essentially just a normal — if buff — baseline human.
